Inspired by improvisational quilts, we will create collage quilts with painted paper and found paper. We will explore different techniques of contemporary collage such as creating painted paper with washes and mark making, approaches to cut up paper in exciting ways, and methods to create a composition. Through collage, we will focus on composition (with an emphasis on negative space) and explore color.
“I like big pieces and long strips. However I get them, that’s how I used them. I liked to sew them however they be. I work it out, student the way to make it, get it to be right, kind of like working a puzzle. You find the colors and the shapes and certain fabrics that work out right.” ~ Annie Mae Young from “The Quilts of Gee’s Bend”

Collages allow me to focus on composition and explore color. I create collages with my own painted paper and found paper, and then add my own embellishments with paint or colored pencil. Collages also give me a chance to give a second life to something painted previously that did not feel complete.

Collages allow me to focus on composition and explore color.
Drawing inspiration from designs of Bauhaus Weavers and the improvisational quilts by the women of Gee’s Bend, I create collages with my own painted paper and found paper, and then add my own embellishments with paint or colored pencil.
